666 with Lavender Zines Archive
6 questions, 6 answers and 6 pics to get your mouths watering for June's PISSUE 1.
Hey wicked pisser,
If you haven’t seen LAVENDER ZINES ARCHIVE on Instagram or stalked their site you are sorely missing out on some full frontal queer history. Creator Kylle St. Trail decided that there needed to be a space where queer media about what we were getting up to, our bodies, sexuality and stories could come together for us to learn from.
The archive is a treasure trove of 1960s zines, matchboxes and ephemera, uncensored and freely available. They are always looking to expand to include more stories across different facets of queer life and also happen to have some amazing prints and things on their site which goes to supporting the cause.
Ahead of our first PISSUE this June featuring our full interview with Lavender Zines Archive, here’s a sneak peek into their world from Kylle:
PISS: What’s the best thing in your magazine collection? (couldn’t pick just one pic sorry!)
Kylle St. Trail: Ooo I’d have to say the Madame Arthur Program from the early 1950’s: It’s signed by a handful of girls including the trans icon Coccinelle.
P: Is there something you don't have yet that you’re dying for?
KST: Any programs or ephemera from The Jewel Box Revue. JBR was a touring group of female impersonators including the legendary Stormé DeLarverie.
P: Where does your magazine collection come from… and where can we get in on the action?
KST: Online. Mostly eBay. Sometimes folks will send me things, which is the most amazing thing ever, I’m very grateful.
P: If you were in charge of Hustler Magazine, what piece would you commission?
KST: If I was in charge of Hustler I would gut it & make it queer as fuck! I would focus on queer joy & experience. I would outline the magazine like Female Mimics. F.M. was a female impersonator magazine from 1963 to 1968 with a modern lens: it’s a drag & trans culture magazine. They really captured a lot of what fascinates me most, like how our queer elders had fun, going to balls or hanging out, who the up-&-coming drag queens were, where the big drag clubs are around the world. FM even gets intimate and talks about how some girls are transitioning. Lots of really great info and GORGEOUS photos.
Who should we be reading/following/subscribing to?
Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis is a MUST, and be sure to check out P.S. Burn this Letter Please by Craig Olsen, chefs kiss.
I follow so many great folks on IG some of my favs are:
P: What’s got you pissed off the most right now?
The state of the fucking world. It’s a fascist hellscape. BUT! I try to balance it with the things that make me happy, like Lavender Zines, my husband, Bice, & my fur-babies, Akiko & C⭐️NDY. Though I never turn a blind eye to what’s going on around me & in the world. Anger mixed with passion gets shit done. True rebellion is happiness.
